Lesotho marks International Day for Biodiversity

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is today commemorating the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) 2026 in Ts’enekeng, Semonkong.

The event, held under the theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” aims to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect ecosystems worldwide.

IDB is observed globally on 22 May.

According to the ministry, the theme highlights the role of local communities in addressing global biodiversity challenges.

The event will focus on Semonkong’s highland wetlands, which are critical for water regulation, biodiversity support, climate resilience, as well as sustaining local livelihoods.

Activities planned include a tour of acommunity botanical garden and a well-conserved wetland.

The ministry noted that the commemoration demonstrates how local actions such as sustainable harvesting, community-based conservation, and environmental education can contribute to global biodiversity goals.
