Matekane pledges accountability

Prime Minister Sam Matekane says his government will institutionalise a new way of working centred on accountability, transparency and measurable results for Basotho.

Addressing the National Leadership Forum in Berea today, Matekane said the initiative and upcoming national dialogue and accountability summit were created to ensure public institutions deliver measurable results and that leaders regularly account to citizens.

“The people of Lesotho expect more than promises. They expect honesty, transparency, fairness, and results,” he noted.

The Premier renewed the commitment he made in October 2022 to strengthen public sector accountability through clear performance targets, transparent monitoring and open reporting.

Matekane said government had learned from Rwanda that transformational change requires united leadership, strong accountability systems, institutionalised coordination across sectors, and open communication with citizens.

“Accountability is not only for the executive but applies to independent institutions, state-owned enterprises, local authorities and all public bodies because we are all funded through public resources generated by taxpayers,” he added.
