The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) will register grain from Basotho farmers under the Local Purchase Programmefrom today until September 4, 2026.
It will then purchase grain between September 9 to 18.
The programme is part of Government’s efforts to support households vulnerable to hunger while supporting Basotho farmers by purchasing their produce directly across all the 10 district.
The DMA has cautioned farmers that registration does not guarantee that all registered grain will be purchased. Registration will be used to assess the available food stocks against the funds available to the Authority. The quantity of grain each farmer will be expected to sell will therefore be determined by registration information.
In a statement, the DMA said only grain from farmers who register during the specified period will be purchased.
“Each bag must have a sample or identification tag, which will be provided separately during the purchasing process and must not be placed inside the bag.
“Farmers are required to pack the grain in clean white or brown bags without any writing or markings. The grain must have been produced in Lesotho by Basotho farmers and must be accompanied by valid documentation confirming its origin, verified and stamped by the chief or agricultural extension office,” it noted.
Grain purchasing will take place only at the Food Management Unit (FMU) collection and distribution stores.
