Youth soccer flouting Covid-19 laws

In their quest to keep youngsters off the streets during the Covid-19 induced school break, some communities stage youth soccer tournaments, but they also run the risk of violating restrictions on gatherings.

Several youth soccer clubs took part in tournaments at Ha Mabote and Mathokoane on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

According to the owner of Thamae Highlanders Football Club, Teboho Molelekoa, the rationale behind such contests is to keep an eye on the kids on behalf of their parents, although in doing so they could be flouting Covid-19 regulations.

“Kids are exposed to different things that could easily get them in trouble with the law and jeopardise their future, especially during these days when there is no school due to this pandemic,” Paul ‘Moshopo’ Tjamela, the owner of the Generation FC added.

Parents say they appreciate what the club owners are doing, as their children – both boys and girls aged between six to 17 – have been well behaved due to taking part in soccer related activities.
