16 Days of Activism launched

Gender, youth, sports and recreation minister Likeleli Tamapane today launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence by reaffirming Lesotho’s commitment to fighting violence against women.

Tampane said Lesotho started supporting the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children, which run from November 25 to December 10, in 2000 and has never looked back since.

She indicated that this year’s theme is ‘gender based violence exists in households, and we need to fight it’. She said this is a way to teach not just women but to call on men too to support the initiative.

She singled out Leribe as one of the districts that have the highest statistics of gender based violence.

“This does not mean the other districts have low numbers, but Leribe seems to be on top. We have visited these districts a lot on cases of gender based violence, which reached its peak during the Covid-19 lockdown, and we tried to help by providing education against the phenomenon,” Tampane said.

She called on all and sundry to collectively combat violence against women and to educate themselves and others about it.
