Stabbings claim lives

Basotho ushered in the New Year with a lot of violence that included stabbings, which saw wards at Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital filled beyond capacity with stab wound patients.

This was disclosed by police on Monday, who said a 20-year old man of Ha Tṧiu in Maseru fatally stabbed his 17-year old girlfriend.

Sub-Iinspector ‘Mareabetsoe Mofoka indicated that on December 31at 11:00pm the couple were together when the victim told the suspect that she was pregnant.

The suspect went into a feat of rage and stabbed the victim more than 20 times until she died on the spot.

Sub-inspector Mofoka said the suspect is still at large.

Still in Maseru, a 35-year-old woman from Ha Motau in Maseru was arrested by police on the Dec 31 for allegedly killing a 48-year old man of Mokhoabong Ha Marakabei, who was her lover.

Sub-inspector Mofoka said reports indicate that on December 31 at 4:00am, the two were at a local public bar with other people when the suspect caused a scene as accused the victim of flirting with another woman.

Reports further show that the victim slapped the suspect who then went outside to arm herself with a broken glass bottle with which she fatally stabbed the victim.

The suspect appeared before the Maseru magistrates court yesterday.

Meanwhile the minister of health Motlatsi Maqelepo last week said trauma wards at Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital were overstuffed with victims of serious wounds suffered from stabbing and assault.
