2nd Covid-19 wave worries nurses

By Kefiloe Kajane

The Lesotho Nurses Association (LNA) is concerned at the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially the number of infections of nurses, 50 of whom are reported to have been infected so far.

LNA said it is due to lack of support from the government of Lesotho that there is still a shortage of lack of personal protective equipment, while some the nurses station at ports of entry to do Covid-19 testing have still not been paid.

In addition, there are nurses who have still not received infection prevention control training, which places them at even more risk given that they are dealing with contagious diseases.

“The isolation site in Mafeteng has been plagued by a range of challenges which hinder nurses from performing their expected duties.

“The nurses working in the isolation centres are no longer placed in quarantine to break the chain of infection, but are doing self-isolation at their homes; this puts their families at risk of being infected by Covid-19,” LNA said. LNA also called on government to act now and show support to the nurses so as to  help reduce the numbers of infections
