Rants’o ouster too little too late – unions

By Kefiloe Kajane

Trade unions are not getting carried away by the sacking of Keketso Rants’o as minister of labour and employment, having made numerous calls in the past for her dismissal.

Rants’o was a casualty of this week’s cabinet reshuffle, which also saw Prince Maliehe vacating his position a minister of defence and national security.

In an interview with theReporter on Friday, Independent Democratic Union of Lesotho general secretary May Rathakane, said with the 2022 general elections around the corner, there isn’t enough time for new minister Moshe Lesoma to fix the damage Rants’o has done, and implement any meaningful changes.

“We were not happy with her work. We needed change, which she failed to do. It is too early to celebrate her removal, but we will just have to wait and see the impact of the new minister. It could be government’s way of pretending to be doing something.

“One of the many things that we had wanted her to do was to conduct an inspection of the textile factories, which are a hive of massive corruption,” Rathakane said. Rants’o had been minister of labour since the 2017 general elections which saw the All Basotho Convention-led coalition wrestle power from the ill-fated Pakalitha Mosisili-led regime which collapsed after a vote of no confide
