Mines, govt to work on destroyed infrastructure

By Neo Kolane

Gem Diamonds is working with the government of Lesotho to rebuild roads and other critical infrastructure damaged in the recent floods, and is assisting affected communities with constructing bridges and securing water supply.

Speaking to theReporter, the public relations officer of Letśeng Diamond Mine, Lebohang Chefa stated that the heavy rainfalls from the past two weeks have caused destruction in Mokhotlong.

“There is a footbridge and other two bridges. One of the bridges was built by Letśeng through Maloraneng Lodge. Both of the bridges were destroyed by the rains. We already had plans to rebuild the bridges because they were our projects,” Chefa said.

He also stated that the plan was to work with the government because the infrastructure of the bridge is destroyed. Thee government approached Letśeng Mine and Gem Diamonds in connection with the destruction and asked if they could not assist in any way.

“Letśeng and Gem were already intending to rebuild the foot bridges and other roads infrastructure,” he stated.

Chefa also stated that they have a water project in Patising village, which was washed away by the overflowing Khubelu River.

The project will be worked on because it helped the community with water supply.
