World to celebrate Social Justice Day

By Teboho Serutla

Lesotho will join the rest of the world in celebrating this year’s World Day of Social Justice on Thursday.

The 20th of February is observed as World Day of Social Justice since 2009. An underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations is defined as Social Justice according to the official website of the United Nations Organization.

According to the United Nations Organisation (UNO), the theme for this year’s World Day of Social Justice is ‘A Call for Social Justice in the Digital Economy’.

The UNO says the Covid-19 pandemic has created the environments of remote working by digital platforms, factors which have influenced the labour opportunities and produced the digital divide and the theme of the current year 2021 will address these features.

“The principles of Social Justice are upheld to promote gender equality or the rights of indigenous people and migrants. To promote development and human dignity through Social Justice is the core value of the UN.

“The UNO is committed to social justice and collective development as it is apparent in the adoption of the Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization by the International Labour Organization. This declaration is focused upon guaranteeing fair and just outcomes for everyone through social protection, justice, employment, fundamental principles, social dialogue, and just rights at the workplace.”
