Massive water project launched

Implementation of the launch of the second phase of the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project is estimated at a total financing of 200 million Euros spread over a period of five years.

This was disclosed by Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro when launching the project at Ha Setene in the Leribe district on Thursday.

Majoro stated that the event marked an important cooperation between Lesotho and the World Bank, the European Union in Lesotho, European Investment Bank and other international agencies, premised on the common goal of supplying potable water.

He said World Bank financing is to the tune of 68.4 million Euros; European Investment Bank 82 million Euros, and the European Union at 41 million Euros; while the government of Lesotho is availing a contribution of 10.2 million Euros.

He explained that clean water supply is essential for good health and contributes to the economic growth of the country.

In addition, he revealed that the international agencies put a premium on reducing poverty, creating employment opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing industry and bringing about economic growth, thereby improving general welfare of the population.
