Community slams water project

By Teboho Serutla

The community of Maloraneng in Mokhotlong have questioned the criteria for a water project that was completed by the Rural Water Supply department through an unnamed contractor, which they claimed left sections of the community.

Chief Molapo Kotela of Pae-la-itlhatsoa says when water supply projects were implemented in Maloraneng, some villages within the Maloraneng area were left out without any explanation.

Kotela says he learned that in February the Rural Water Supply approached the community and promised to deliver a contractor who will be building tanks and taps, to address the community’s water crisis.

Kotela says that the contractor built a tank near a water source in Maloraneng, which not only turned out to be a white elephant, but also too small to supply other neighbouring villages.

“This clearly excluded other communities. The contractor’s explanation was that he worked in accordance with a map provided by RWS. He said was ordered to install water tanks and taps for schools and clinics, yet there is no school in Maloraneng.”

In response, RWS project manager Mozwandile Mabaso said the project was funded by UNICEF, which focuses on public facilities like schools and clinics, more than communities.

“We encouraged the community members to submit their concerns and needs in writing so they can be evaluated. Yet, until now, no letter from the community has arrived at our offices.”
