Africa loses M95bn to road accidents annually

By ‘Majirata Latela

The minister of transport, Tṧoeu Mokeretla, has urged people to refrain from drinking and driving during the Easter holidays, as in 2020, 45 people lost their lives in March during the Easter holidays.

He further indicated that in 2019, 322 people got involved in roads accidents and investigations revealed that 90 percent of the accidents were caused by people who did not abide by the rules and regulations of the roads.

“This shows that road accidents don’t just happen, they are caused by people who break the road rules and regulations such as driving beyond speed limits, drunk driving, and driving under duress.

“I urge all people to remember that life is a gift from God, that has to be valued by all people. I plead with you all to look out for one another on the roads. I still believe that one day we will play our part on the roads to make sure that we no longer have road accidents,” he said.

He added that road accidents still seem to be a challenge to the United Nations, Africa and Lesotho, with the World Health Organisation reporting in 2018 that Africa loses M95billion per year due to road accidents.
