World Environment Day marked in Maseru

The importance of keeping the environment clean came to the fore today when an assortment of organisations took to the streets to clean their areas.

This was a cleaning campaign meant to raise awareness about the effects of litter pollution on the environment. It was also meant to raise awareness on what individuals could do to protect the environment and prevent climate change.

The event was hosted to mark the World Environment Day.

The day was marked by the British High Commission in Maseru, the United Nations Lesotho, Vodacom Lesotho and the American International School came together to host a cleanup event in their territories.

Speaking at the event, World Food Programme (WFP) country director Aurore Rusiga said while it was time for the world to mark the day for the second time since the emergence of the Covd-19 pandemic, people must not neglect the environment.

Rusica said the world was heading towards the road for recovery against the virus.

She indicated that communities, businesses, government and individuals have a role to play in making sure that they live in a clean environment.

The British High commissioner Anne Macro said cleaning and caring for the environment was highly important, noting that life was dependent on clean environment.

It is highly important that people be encouraged to take care of the environment, she urged.
