Rapper shelves classes for music

By Neo Kolane

Twenty-one-year old Khotsofalang Quinane has taken an unusually bold step, of temporarily shelving his studies to pursue a career in music.

LunerTeak, as he is fondly known in music and social circles, admitted in an interview with theReporter that putting his studies on hold might seem like a crazy idea, but it is the highest level of self-honesty he has ever reached.

“I always felt like I owe myself something really huge, which is focusing on what I believe in most, namely music.

“I have been doing well in my studies, I know, but not so good with my music because I did it as a hobby,” he said.

The rapper therefore said that he found it a good decision to take a break from his studies and focus on music and invest in it.

Quinane, who was in his third year of film production at varsity, revealed that he actually asked himself why didn’t he wait till he finished schooling.

“I asked myself that question about a year back, talked about it with my family. Even though school did sound like a reasonable idea, it meant I would have to wait more before launching my music career, which to me seemed like injustice to myself.

“I couldn’t even concentrate anymore in school, thinking about the international music opportunities I would have missed because I was waiting to graduate.

The Quthing-born youngster utters some wise words, saying that in life nothing is guaranteed, the same way some musicians never made it to the top, some graduates still never made it to their dream jobs.

He emphasised that difficult decisions must be taken after some honest soul-searching and objective assessment of one’s convictions and options.

LunerTeak added that there are plenty music streaming websites, pay per download websites and all are bound to pay royalties to musicians. He said there are also features, whereby artists pay each other when singing together.

“It all takes hard work and knowing the right ways of distributing your music as an artist, to make it in the industry. In spite of the COVID-19 challenge, I can’t mention shows and events, but we also benefit from them.

“We have different characters, and re influenced by our backgrounds and certainty of our goals. So I’m not encouraging anyone to emulate me if they don’t yet have a very clear picture of what they want,” he warned candidly.

“Some many drop out because school is so challenging, but believe me there’s no value in something if there are risks or challenges. LunerTeak is ready for every challenge and is willing to take any risks.  That maybe the difference in why some may do as I did, only to find out it’s the worst decision they ever took,” he thought.

“At first, I approached rap as a hobby until I realised I can actually turn it into a career. The beauty of life when you meet challenges in what you love most, and you never back down, hitting harder and harder until something comes out to reward you. That’s the type of life I’m already dwelling in now,” LunerTeak said.
