Lepheane faces fraud charges

By Teboho Serutla

A 40-year old ‘Mathapelo Lepheane of Nazareth, Ha Nqheku in the district of Maseru has appeared before the Maseru Magistrate court facing charges of fraud.

Police reports said this week the woman sold a site located at Ha Matala to three people, one at M30 000 and two others for M20 000 each.

She was to appear in court yesterday after being kept in prison.

According to the police public relations office, Lepheane came face to face with the law as she was nabbed for impersonation claiming to be police officer in 2018. She claimed she was responsible for enrolling recruits at the Police Training College in exchange for money.

She was later arrested after complaints were labelled against her by those who had fallen prey to her criminal acts.

She was released on bail upon appearing in court charged with fraud.

But she breached the bail conditions as she failed to appear for remand triggering another charge for contempt whereby she is expected to face the music tomorrow.

Lepheane has also been charged of fraud after she defrauded a Leqele resident of M10 305 in pretext that she would sell her poultry chicks and the chicken feed. But she has since not fulfilled her promises.

She had said the ‘project’ was initiated by her office as a measure to fight poverty.
