Studio to revolutionize industry

By Neo Kolane

With SourceCode motion pictures releasing a Sesotho action series called Motlalentoa, it is hoping to break the stereotype of Lesotho not being featured the right way.

SourceCode is a film and television studio that is driven by the passion to contribute and participate in the evolutionary process of television, media and film through Three-D3D animation and visual effects.

Motlalentoa, loosely translated as one who brings war, is based in a fictional community called Meriting in the Kingdom of Lesotho.

Released on early last month, Motlalentoa is a series about Potlako, a man of great character and principle as fate brings him to Meriting. He knows what challenges that he faces.

In an interview with theReporter, one of the directors of the series, Katleho Monyako articulated that as SourceCode, Motlalentoa would do justice looking at the fact that SourceCode wanted a Sesotho action series.

Monyako explained that he wants people to know that in Lesotho there are talented people whose work is not recognised hence the special effect seen on the series.

However, all the people seen acting in the series contributed, but the concept initially came from the two siblings; Katleho and Khotso Monyako.

“We are doing it for Basotho; the language used is hard core Sesotho which is important in terms of communicating with the audience which is mostly Basotho.

“A lot of people who reviewed the series were not surprised to see the kind of content; looking at the shots and the graphics,” Katleho said.

The self-taught individual said the idea came in mind around September 2020 and it began to be shot in October 2020.

Khotso said SourceCode excels more on special effects; records audios and does photo-shoots.

“We are one of the first to introduce visual effects in Lesotho movies like shooting people and doing martial arts,” Khotso revealed.

He explained that a good story is one that “captures the audience and a cinematography that does not distract the audience from the story being told.”

“The Motlalentoa story resonates with Basotho. The story captures every detail,” he said.

It is through SourceCode that people will love and enjoy being in Lesotho, as a country that has its unique history and language.

“Motlalentoa might have been a low budget series because it was shot with one camera and no special lights were used. The light bulbs were built but it portrays Lesotho in an authentic way.

“As SourceCode we want to revolutionize the industry in Lesotho. We want to participate in the revolution of television and media in general because it is constantly changing,” Khotso observed.

Motlalentoa season one is available on SourceCode YouTube page. Season two is expected to come soon.
