Maphathe warns against human trafficking

By Neo Kolane

The deputy minister of home affairs, Maimane Maphathe, has condemned human trafficking, which usually sees young Basotho women and girls promised marriage by foreign men who end up turning them into sex slaves abroad.

Maphathe was addressing the community of Ha Long in the council of Ha Tinisolo in the Thaba Tseka district on Monday this week.

He told the community about the dangers of human trafficking, especially to young girls and women who are most vulnerable to this crime.

At the same occasion, the principal secretary of home affairs, Tumelo Raboletse, disclosed that the government of Lesotho and the international community have also expressed great concern at the alarming rate of human trafficking in Lesotho in recent days.

Raboletse said the ministry has been doing its best to educate Basotho about the scourge of trafficking in persons especially.

He emphasised the need for parents to teach their children not to be lured into falling victim to human trafficking.
