LRCS to assist victims of strong winds

The Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) will be launching aM2.4-million initiative to help families whose houses were destroyed by strong winds in Qacha ‘s Nek and Thaba Tseka on October 26 at Sehlabathebe In Qacha’s Nek district.

The communications manager of LRCS, Tokoloho Khutsoane, revealed that the M2.4million disaster relief emergency fund will assist 150 households in both districts, who were affected by strongs winds in August this year.

Khutsoane mentioned that out of 510 households affected by the disaster, 348 will receive M772, which is the first of the two months cash transfer using Mpesa and Ecocash platforms.

“The funds are meant to buy dignity kits, especially for girls and women while the men will be expected to buy toiletries only.

“In addition, 162 households whose houses were totally destroyed will each receive a once-off multipurpose grant to the tune of M4200 on the same day of the launch, using the stated local mobile networks’ cash transfer facilities.

“The once-off multipurpose cash grant is aimed at buying blankets, hygiene kits, bedding, kitchen sets, mattresses as well as rebuilding the destroyed houses,” Khutsoane said.

Khutsoane also disclosed that 510 households were affected by heavy wind storms between August 26 and 30 2021. 162 houses were totally destroyed and their inhabitants were accommodated by neighbours and relatives while 348 were partially destroyed.
