NUL clears air on ‘strange sickness’

By Neo Kolane

The National University of Lesotho (NUL) says, contrary to news reports, there is no widespread occurrence of a ‘strange’ disease at the university’s Roma campus.

Reports circulated in both mainstream and social media in May of an outbreak of a mysterious disease that afflicted female students at the university.

Three female students were presented at different periods with some situations that were feared as similar.

The NUL vice chancellor Professor Isaac Olusola-Fajana said medical experts have shown marked difference in each case.

He said the first, which proved fatal, was a case if congenital cancer as confirmed by the late student’s parents.

“The second case has been treated and still being monitored. The third which was said to be scheduled for a corrective procedure is also being monitored accordingly.

“The district health management team has taken charge of the reported cases and have so far reported no indications of a pandemic,” Olusola-Fajana said.

The vice chancellor urged all stakeholders of NUL to stay calm saying there is an obligation on humanity to recognise that health issues are confidential, and lives deserve utmost respect, and health incidences should not be used to score cheap political points.
