EU deploys election observers

By ‘Majirata Latela

The European Union has for the first time deployed long-term observers in the 10 districts of Lesotho ahead of the October 7 2022 general elections. This after Lesotho approached EU to deploy the observer mission.

According to the EU Chief Observer Ignazio Carrao, the organisation has from Wednesday this week deployed 11 teams of long-term observers across the country for six weeks. The observers are from 27 EU member states and Norway and will also be reinforced with 30 short-term observers on the day of elections.

“The observers will asses every aspect of the electoral process including the campaigning by political parties and the preparations for the elections across Lesotho.

“Since the election process does not end on the day of elections, we are also planning to stay in the country for some time after the election day to continue observing,” he said.

EU legal analyst Renata Tardioli pointed out that the team is also observing and following the court cases that are linked to the election process and will give their observation when giving the final report.
