Voters in Lesotho were given an opportunity to freely exercise their right to vote on Friday and it is now up to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to make sure that the will of the people is accurately and fairly translated into election results.
This was mentioned by IEC’s director of elections Mpaiphele Maqutu at a press conference on Friday evening shortly after the close of voting.
Maqutu also thanked the more than 16,000 IEC staff members (permanent or temporary) who made the election possible in a very challenging financial, logistical and political environment.
He said there were more than 2,560 candidates competing this National Assembly election, and he thanked most of them who participated in a non-violent manner respecting the code of conduct.
“In cases where there were any violations of the code of conduct, our Electoral Tribunal will be receiving and adjudicating the lodged complaints against the candidates and political parties,” Maqutu said.
