Let’s reflect and celebrate the milestones achieved

By TKay Nthebe

As a financial wellness advocate and columnist for Leruo – a financial education platform available on print, radio, and digital platforms I often encourage Basotho and every follower of our conversations to have financial discipline, set financial goals and plan for the future. What I believe financial advisers, financial coaches and planners need to do more is to encourage consumers to reflect on their financial journey and celebrate milestones achieved. However, big or small because it is NOT EASY!

In this week’s article, my focus is on celebrating the financial milestones achieved.

It is no secret that 2022 has been extremely challenging – with the high cost of living, skyrocketing fuel and cooking oil prices, high-interest rates, anxiety from the national elections and recently the Qatar FIFA World Cup.

  • Reflect on the journey

Take time this holiday season to reflect on the past year. Set aside some alone time and critically review how you have managed your finances and relationships. Ask yourself ‘have I been intentional about my personal and professional development?’ Print out your twelve-month bank statements and review them critically. What subscriptions do you need to cancel? Which spending habits do you need to change? Which loans do you need to pay off?

  • Embrace the lessons learnt

For many Basotho, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed how financially unprepared we were. The past year was no different! Many made mistakes at work, in their relationships and with their finances. This festive season, I encourage you to forgive yourself and heal, it is important. However, learn from your mistakes and keep growing! Commit to working on yourself and becoming a better person, parent, spouse/partner, colleague and friend. Invest in your personal development and seek professional help where necessary.

  • Celebrate the achievements

As Holmes writes “In moments of quiet reflection, our minds embrace the sea that we have crossed.” Personally, I have crossed many ‘seas’ and overcame big challenges this year. I know you have too. Let’s spend time during these holidays celebrating all the goals achieved, regardless of how big or small they may be. Celebrate the relationships you’ve nurtured, the loans you’ve settled, the savings and investments started, the program you’ve enrolled in, for taking care of your mental health and for ALWAYS showing up.

On behalf of Leruo and the Alliance Insurance family, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2023. My hope is that the content we continue to share on this platform has helped you navigate your finances and make better financial decisions. Happy holidays and stay safe. Likhomo!
