Govt sensitises chiefs on social protection programmes

By Neo Kolane

The Ministry of Gender, Youth, Sports and Social Development will today engage principal chiefs and other stakeholders to sensitise them on the National Social Protection on Strategy (NSPS) II and National Information System for Social Assistance (NISSA) programmes.

The meeting will be held at Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village.

The ministry is working in partnership with UNICEF Lesotho and the European Union Delegation to disseminate information on the two programmes.

NSPS II 2021-2031, which was launched by the government in December 2022, is an information system that helps in identifying households in need of government support through social protection. It contains information on over 90 percent of all households in Lesotho.

On the other hand, NISSA seeks to address the socio-economic needs of the vulnerable and under-priviledged.

In a statement, UNICEF Lesotho said that interactions with different stakeholders had shown the need to disseminate more information about the two initiatives.

“NISSA has proven successful in targeting the poorest of the population through government surveys,” it noted.

It added that several strategic papers had suggested that the project should be promoted more and maintained to shape the country’s social protection strategies.
