Sim card registration starts

By ‘Majirata Latela

The minister of Communications, science and technology, Sam Rapapa on Friday launched the sim card registration process in Maseru.

The process is meant to capture and register personal information of existing subscribers.

Speaking at the launch, Rapapa said the sim card registration means the end of the practice of defrauding people through fraudulent and unknown faceless personalities.

“It is my humble appeal that you don’t wait until the last day to register, the two network operators mainly Vodacom and Econet have assured me that the process will be very smooth and will be deploying people to help with the registration throughout the country.

“Children, old people and people living with disability who will not be able to go and register physically can do so through guardians. The guardians must bring along the National Identification card, birth certificate of the child or ID of the person they will be registering on their behalf, and a letter showing that they are the legal guardians of such,” he said.

Vodacom Chief Executive Mohale Ralebitso emphasised that both network operators will be seen together when doing the registration across the country. He said the two networks are ready to serve Basotho without discrimination.

Econet’s General Marketing and Customer experience, ‘Mapusetso Ntšekhe also promised that the registration services will also be found closer to people. He also made an assurance that the registration will be free.
