Preparing for English Language examinations

By Seleoe Nonyane

Highly experienced private tutor Seadimo Monnapula is going all out to ensure that high school students due to sit for English Language acquire all the tools required before their end of year examinations.

Monnapula will hold an eight-week examination preparation boot-camp that is expected to start in August.

Talking to theReporter this week, Monnapula revealed that interested learners who are willing to go beyond the eight weeks will then continue with her programme in a private tutoring format to focus on their individual challenges that cannot be addressed in a traditional classroom setup.

She said her programme supports teaching and learning that takes place in the classroom but because of the volume of students that teachers usually deal with, it is hard to reach each and every student.

So to address this, her programme uses a mixture of general and learner specific approaches that help to refocus the content students learn in the classroom into how they can successfully apply it to the examination.

Monnapula said the examination preparation bootcamp aims to help learners that will be sitting writing English Language in the examinations.

The programme will help students build a relationship with their future examiner by providing a more focused interpretation of their curriculum, so they can successfully sit for the examination.

She indicated that in her experience in tutoring, she has helped students with varying degrees in ability.

She recalled that all the students she has helped seemed to express insecurity about sitting for the examination and it is that uncertainty about what to expect that this bootcamp looks to dispel.

“I want students to be in a position to know what to expect and prepare for it well accordingly.

“We use their skills and what they are comfortable with to prepare adequately for the examination questions. Contrary to popular belief, this is not for struggling students only; every student across the spectrum will benefit from a tailor-made programme,” she said.

She emphasized that she highlights, in specific detail, the requirements of each section.

“We go through all the sections of their papers and list every single aspect of language needed to satisfy a high grade.”

Monnapula explained that this benefits both learners and their teachers as the former get to know what to apply and where to apply it.

The programme also benefits learners by offering a sense of direction as it dispels any insecurity about the examination, by outlining exactly what to expect and how to prepare for it.

She said every student, including the proficient ones, are welcome to this programme.

“programme caters for everybody because they can know the content and not be able to answer examination questions appropriately therefore, it helps with that,” she added.
