Allu takes his shoe business up a notch

Rorisang Hatasi, widely known as ‘Allu’, has taken a bold step in his entrepreneurial journey – transitioning from an online shoe business to launching his own physical store at the BNP Centre in Maseru.

The 26-year-old entrepreneur hails from Leloaleng, Mafeteng, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the National University of Lesotho (NUL), which he obtained in 2022.

Allu began selling shoes online in November 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Faced with the challenges of a high unemployment rate, he sought innovative ways to earn an income. Drawing inspiration from his brother – an established businessman – Allu found the motivation and guidance to start his own venture.

“My brother also provided me with valuable guidance in financial literacy, equipping me with the knowledge to manage my finances effectively and make informed business decisions. This combination of support fuelled my determination to succeed in the competitive online marketplace,” he shared.

Like many start-ups, his online business faced several challenges. One recurring issue was the mismatch in shoe sizes, which often led to returns and customer dissatisfaction. Logistics were another hurdle – based in Roma at the time, Allu frequently had to travel to Maseru for deliveries, occasionally missing deadlines due to transport limitations.

Recognising the need for a more efficient system, Allu decided to open a physical store at the BNP Centre – a location that had already served as a central meeting point for many of his deliveries. This strategic decision, he said, was not only about convenience but also about building a recognisable and reliable brand.

Allu expressed ambitions of expanding further by opening additional stores in various districts across Lesotho.

“This move aims to improve customer accessibility and strengthen our brand presence throughout the country. I want to create a robust retail network that better serves our clients and reaches a wider audience,” he said.

In addition to shoes, the store now features a wider range of products, including caps, jeans, and hoodies – marking the beginning of Allu’s broader fashion offering.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Basotho for your unwavering support throughout my journey – from an online marketplace to opening a physical store. This transition is not just a personal achievement; it represents the potential we all have to grow and innovate within our local economy,” he noted.

He added, “I’m excited to bring our products closer to the people, fostering a personal connection that online platforms often lack. Together, we can build a vibrant marketplace that celebrates our culture, supports local artisans, and empowers one another. Thank you for believing in this vision – I look forward to serving you in our new space. Let us continue to uplift each other and build a brighter future for all Basotho.”
