Journalists receive training on cooperative businesses

Eighteen local journalists are attending a three-day workshop on cooperative businesses at MolengoaneNazareth, organised by the Department of Cooperatives under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development.

The workshop, which commenced yesterday and ends tomorrow, aims to enhance the journalists’ understanding of cooperative enterprises and their role in promoting Lesotho’s economic growth.

In his welcome remarks, Principal Lecturer at the Division of Entrepreneurship, KhothalangRamoorosi, described the workshop as a “historicalmoment” for the department as it seeks to build a strong relationship with the media.

He said this collaboration is expected to foster a better understanding of cooperative initiatives and promote economic development.

Presenting on the mandate and functions of cooperatives, Senior Cooperative Officer in the Department of Cooperatives, ‘MaboitumeloLethunya, explained that cooperatives are established with the main aims of creating jobs, ensuring food security, curbing unnecessary idling, and addressing social issues.

She noted that cooperatives have employed Basotho, both members and non-members, in various sectors such as finance, agriculture, and handicrafts, with plans to expand into more segments.
