Cooking contest for charity

By Seleoe Nonyane

Rorisang Tlebere, AfroDeejay and Chef Tee will bring the first event of its kind – the Charity Cook-out – on July 8 2023 at Phomolong Guest House.

The competition will see Tlebere, popularly known as BigBear, and AfroDeejay, putting their cooking skills to test.

The main objective of the event is to raise funds for charity.

Talking to theReporter this week, the event’s organiser and competing contestant BigBear explained that the Charity Cook-out is basically a charity event celebrating the culinary arts.

It is also intended to provide financial support, clothing and food parcels to the less fortunate.

“We’ll also be advancing education by providing school shoes, uniforms and fees to the disadvantaged,” he said.

He noted that they were hoping to attract as many corporations as possible through sponsorships and donations.

The Charity Cookout event is open to everyone as it will bring a family-friendly environment. Entrance fee is M50.

The audience will also have an opportunity to enjoy good music and network while the two competitors lock horns.

BigBear said the Charity Cookout was conceived after a few back and forth food jokes between him and AfroDeejay and Chef Tee.

He said the host (Chef Tee) proposed the idea and they were approached by a local natural spice production company, Spice Queen, which offered to power the event. Preparations then took off from there.

“Preparations are 89 percent complete. We have already secured a venue, cooking utensils and ingredients.

“We just need to finalise a few things; the challenge we have right now is getting donations. They are coming in but they very slowly. I am confident, though, that our people will come through for us.

“It is still unbelievable how this whole thing came about. We had not banked on the huge engagement that we are getting on social media, especially on Facebook, since the unveiling of the event, taking into consideration that this is the first of its kind in the country,” BigBear noted.

He enthused that this is the first of many Charity Cook-out shows to come, and promised they would be bigger and better with more exciting challenges.

He indicated that the panel consists of four judges, three of whom are professional chefs, and one a non-professional chef who knows a thing or two about food.
