The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has de-registered two more political parties for contravening the National Assembly Electoral Act of 2011.
The parties are the Basotho Batho Democratic Party (BBDP) and the All Democratic Corporation (ADC).
ADC had registered with the electoral commission on April 27 2011 while BBDP had registered on December 8 2006.
This development announced by the commission on Friday brings to nine the total of political parties de-registered by the IEC ahead of the local government elections scheduled for 29 September this year.
Section 27 of the National Assembly Electoral Act, 2011 states that the Commission may cancel a political party if it ceases to exist or no longer functions; if the party has dissolved or is intending to dissolve, or if it does not comply with section 24 (1) a to f) of the same Act.
It further shows that a party can be deregistered if it does not comply with its obligations in terms of the Act, after being warned by the IEC to do so. The Hamore Democratic Party (HDP), Tṧepo ea Basotho (TEB), People’s Convention (PC), Alliance of All Basotho Victims (ABV), Majalefa Development Movement (MDM), White Horse Party (WHP) and Sankatana Social Democrats (SSD) were also recently de-registered by the IEC.
