Wool smuggler behind bars

A man assumed to be a Lesotho national has been detained at Ficksburg after being caught attempting to smuggle wool worth M1.6 million into South Africa.

According to unconfirmed reports the man was arrested at Clocolan shortly after crossing into South Africa through the Peka Bridge in Leribe on Tueaday this week.

He was driving a truck carrying 127 bales of wool, in contravention of new government laws prohibiting unauthorised  exportation of wool and mohair which came into operation earlier this year after being adopted by the Lesotho parliament in 2018.

This also happens amid a South African ban on importation of all animal products following an anthrax outbreak in some parts of Lesotho in May.

The suspect was in possession of a Lesotho identification card although his names, seen by theReporter, suggest he could be South African.

The Ficksburg police have opened a case of bribery and illegal immigration. This after the suspect, who had entered South Africa without a passport, attempted to bribe a police officer.
