Academy for DJs opens doors

By Seleoe Nonyane

Aspiring DJs will get an opportunity to learn the art first-hand from one of the best DJs the country has ever had.

Motlatsi Makhetha, popularly known as Afro Deejay, has opened a ‘dj-ing’ academy called Afro Dj-ing Academy, which will open its doors for the first time in March 2024.

A group of 10 students will attend 10 classes per month; a monthly course will cost M2000 while a two-month course will cost M4000.

The students will learn basic mixing techniques, music selection, equalizing, beat matching, social media branding and image selection.

In an interview with theReporter yesterday, the DJ said he decided to establish this school because he wants to see young people thriving in the entertainment field.

He said he had always been getting requests from individuals asking him to teach them how to DJ, so he decided to branch into passing on his knowledge to others.

The plan is not to just leave it at djing, but when time goes on, he will expand into training MCs, dancers and influencers.

Afro Deejay noted that he has noticed that talent in Lesotho is overwhelming but DJs still lack in certain areas of the entertainment industry, especially how to win people over.

He said there’s a lot of DJs in the country, but the number does not say anything; what matters is whether they are fulfilling their purpose.

The classes will commence in the first week of March when they take in the first batch of students, with the second batch coming in after the first group completes their training.

Afro Deejay pointed out that if entertainers introduce or bring professionalism in the country then it would be easier to drive investments into the entertainment industry.

Customers and clients will become more comfortable to invest in the business of entertainment and they will view it as legit.

He said the plan is to also do a search for superstars, which is another one way of investing in the talent of Basotho.

“During the winter holidays, the youth should occupy themselves with something productive that can help them reach for the stars. I have never taught people on a platform like this before.

“With my expertise, I am quite adept at teaching people how to DJ from scratch; I know all the basics.

“I have only helped people with a basic idea of dj-ing by giving them tips on how to perfect their craft,” he indicated.
