No confidence judgement today

‘Mantšali Phakoana

The High Court is today expected to deliver judgement in a case in which Thaba-Moea constituency MP Lejone Puseletso is challenging a proposed motion of no confidence against prime minister SamMatekane.

The case was heard by judges Molefi Makara, Keketso Moahloli, and Tšeliso Monaphathi and judgement was set to be delivered on Wednesday this week but it was moved to today. No reasons were given for the postponement.

Puseletso, an MP for the ruling Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) party, had filed a case last year, which forced the Speaker of the National Assembly, Tlohang Sekhamane, to defer the motion by the opposition until finalisation of the application.

Puseletso wants the court to order the deferment of the motion pending the finalisation of the ongoing national reforms in terms of which the Parliament shall promulgate the comprehensive provision to regulate the passing of no confidence.

The opposition has accused Maketane’s government of incompetence, nepotism, corruption, and using security forces to harass opposition legislators. As a result, they want him replaced by opposition and Democratic Congress (DC) leader, Mathibeli Mokhothu as premier.
