DMA boss appointed national relief coordinator

The Disaster Management Authority (DMA) chief executive officer Reatile Elias has been appointed national relief coordinator.

This following the declaration of DMA Notice No.86 of 2024, and in accordance with the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 1997.

In the letter issued on Thursday this week, prime minister Sam Matekane said “I appoint you as the national relief coordinator for the duration of food insecurity declaration.

“During this period, you shall under the guidance of the task force of ministers dealing with disaster perform the following functions among others,
formulate disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery strategies, disaster management plans and disaster relief plans to meet all foreseeable requirements in consultation with other relevant institutions; and direct, coordinate, supervise and monitor all intervention programs undertaken by government departments, international organizations development partners as well as civil society during this period.”

Elias will further prepare and provide regular updates as well as technical advice to task force on the impact of all intervention programmes being undertaken.

“I thus take this opportunity to wish you all the best in fulfilling this responsibility on behalf of the government and people of Lesotho,” Matekane added.

Elias was newly appointed chief executive officer in May this year after the late ‘Makhotso Mahosi who was gunned down last year.
