UN’s Mohammed visits Lesotho

The United Nations Deputy Secretary General, Amina J. Mohammed, over the weekend visited the Polihali Dam site where Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project works are currently underway.

During her visit to Lesotho, Mohammed participated in key national events, including high level meetings, field visits, and a youth dialogue, reinforcing the United Nation’s continued partnership with Lesotho.

Her visit to Polihali Dam was meant to review the progress of key infrastructure project under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which has significant social and economic implications for the country.

In a statement, the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority hailed Mohammed’s visit.

“Engagements at this level underline our mutual commitment to sustainable and equitable socio-economic development for all Basotho,” it said.

“The collaborative spirit shared between Lesotho and the UN exemplified a united front in tackling pressing challenges such as water scarcity, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic inequality.

“With the support of international partners, Lesotho stands at a pivotal moment in its development trajectory, particularly with the LHWP as a cornerstone for its growth strategy,” the LHDA added.

Mohammed also attended the country’s bicentennial and 58th Independence Day celebrations at Setsoto Stadium on Friday.
