Local girl’s rise as SHEIN model

Rehauhetsoe Grace Maruping, a Lesotho native, has carved a niche in China’s fashion scene, working as a model for global brand SHEIN after overcoming numerous challenges.

In an interview with theReporter, Rehauhetsoe shared her incredible journey from the serene landscapes of Lesotho to the vibrant fashion industry in China.

At just 26, she has not only made a name for herself as a model for SHEIN, but has also become a symbol of perseverance and passion.

Rehauhetsoe’s story began when she moved to China at the age of 18 to pursue a degree in International Marketing.

After her graduation in July 2021, she immediately embarked on a Master’s degree in Business Management, which she completed in October 2024. Despite her academic commitments, her passion for modelling remained undeterred.

Reflecting on her early days in China, Rehauhetsoe recounted the challenges she faced.

“I was often told I was too ‘thick, curvy, and short for a model. And there were times when race played a role in rejections,” she recounted.

Yet, these setbacks only fuelled her determination. Her love for photography and belief in her photogenic nature, which began at 17 in Lesotho, kept her going.

Rehauhetsoe’s breakthrough came when an agency she was affiliated with recommended her to SHEIN.

“It was a pivotal moment. SHEIN’s inclusive approach saw beyond traditional norms, and they embraced what I had to offer,” she said.

The transition to modelling in China was not without its cultural challenges. “Adapting to a new culture was daunting. But I learned to love my body and maintain self-confidence, which became my armour against criticism,” she noted.

For Rehauhetsoe, modelling was initially a hobby, but it evolved into a rewarding career. She emphasized the importance of adaptability in the ever-changing fashion landscape, learning from seasoned models, and staying updated with fashion trends.

As her influence grows, she remains humble and grateful. “Seeing clothes I modeled sell out online is surreal,” she said with a smile. “It’s a testament to hard work and the power of pursuing your passions.”

Rehauhetsoe is optimistic about the industry’s future, noting improvements in body positivity and representation. However, balancing her career with personal life remains a challenge.

“I’m still figuring it out. But I’m committed to making it work,” she said determinedly.

Her story is one of hope, inspiring others to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

As she continues her journey with SHEIN, Rehauhetsoe exemplifies resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.
