Lesotho grants first satellite internet license to Starlink

The Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) has granted the country’s first satellite internet license to Starlink, a service developed by US tech entrepreneur, Elon Musk.

The move marks a significant milestone in expanding country’s digital infrastructure and enhancing internet accessibility nationwide.

The license allows Starlink to establish a satellite network and offer internet services to both individuals and businesses across Lesotho. This development is expected to introduce greater competition and innovation within the country’s communications sector.

Announcing the decision, the LCA said the license aligns with its strategic goal of modernising Lesotho’s digital landscape and promoting inclusive technological growth.

Starlink first submitted its application in April 2024. The licensing process included a rigorous review of regulatory frameworks and extensive public consultations to ensure transparency and community involvement. A second round of consultations, which concluded in March 2025, provided further opportunity for public input. The LCA carefully reviewed all submissions before making its final decision.

The approved license grants Starlink the authority to operate in Lesotho for a period of 10 years.

The LCA expressed gratitude to all stakeholders and members of the public who participated in the consultation process, calling it a landmark step towards a more connected future for Lesotho.
