Sipho aims to revolutionize architecture

Architecture and construction company Generic Perspective Architects aims to become a proficient designer and innovator in property development, as well as knowledgeable critics in the sustainability and recuperation of construction as a whole.

The company was established by three professional architects in 2017, combining their expertise to give birth to Generic Perspective Architects.

theReporter spoke to one of the directors, Sipho Mochochoko who after matriculating followed a career in architectural studies at Lerotholi Polytechnic for a duration of three years.

In the second year the institute exposes students to an experiential training for practical involvement. There he got attached with the ministry of public works and transport as an intern for seven months; he teamed up with a mentor from the ministry who is now part of Generic Perspective Architects.

Mochochoko is now a self-employed technician and designer and has been involved in several projects such as the FIFA Goal Project for the Lesotho Football Association in Maputsoe, the new Anglican Bishop residence in Maseru West as chief designer, and a number of private properties yet to be built in Lesotho.

He noted that many Basotho architects are not exposed to different buildings because at heart they are traditionally cultured, and their yard will always have a section to grow crops instead of a drive-way.

“The other problem is that many architects in the country are technologists not designers, which tends to lead to monotonous buildings. This is a huge handicap, as one needs to have a passion of designing.

“We as Generic Perspective Architects, are keen to learn beyond the educational level, and we want more up and coming architects to do the same.”

Generic Perspective Architects focuses more on designing and leans more towards the sustainability of designs. They do not design something that will go catastrophic, but they would rather go green.

“Architecture in Lesotho is infused in technology rather than design; the technology part is perfect, what’s is lacking is the design.”
