UN takes stock on anti-GBV fight progress

The United Nations in Lesotho and the UN Development Coordination Office (DCO) Africa will host a sub-regional gender-based violence (GBV) stock-take dialogue tomorrow.

The meeting will bring together resident coordinators from six Southern African countries; Botswana, Eswatini, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Lesotho, to assess progress and strengthen joint action to end GBV in the region.

In a recent statement, the UN said GBV remains endemic across Southern Africa, rooted in deep-seated social, economic, and political challenges such as inequality, rapid urbanisation, poverty, unemployment, and institutional weaknesses.

“While each country faces unique circumstances, common drivers of GBV persist across the region, perpetuating gender inequality and violence,” the statement noted.
