Foundation launches 1Billion Rising Lesotho campaign

A local community-based non-profit organisation todaylaunched a campaign to promote menstrual health, end period poverty, and keep the girl child at school.

The 1Billion Rising Lesotho 2026 campaign run by the Maleah Foundation will commerce in February.

The organisation advocates for a period-friendly Lesotho, where menstruation is normalised, free of stigma and discrimination and where young women can thrive with dignity and equal opportunity.

It also works to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights, prevent gender-based violence and nurture leadership among girls and young women, empowering them to speak up, make decisions and take the lead in their communities.

The 1Billion Rising campaign is a global, mass-action movement to end violence against women and girls, founded by Eve Ensler in 2012 as part of the V-Day movement.

The co-founder of Maleah Foundation, MolebohengMathosi, said the campaign will use public events, often featuring dance, to raise awareness of the statistic that one in three women will be a victim of rape or violence in her lifetime, which equals over one billion women and girls.

“This initiative aims to break the silence surrounding violence, demand justice, and foster a global culture of respect,” she noted.
