Mahao outlines plans

Newly appointed minister of law justice and correctional services, Prof Nqosa Mahao, announced the ministry’s plans which it hopes to accomplish before the end of the year.

Mahao told the media that he intends to get the ball rolling, especially on the reforms process which his ministry is more vested in.

Among other plans, Mahao said the ministry will push for establishment of a Lesotho Human Rights Commission after the relevant law is passed by parliament. He also hopes to deliver an amendment that will make the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences autonomous.

“I am also going to push for the Independent Electoral Commission to be autonomous so that it only reports directly to parliament and is in a position to manage its finances, while at the same time working on Political Parties Act.

“We have also taken note of longstanding concerns over the Judiciary system of Lesotho, and we will make sure that we address urgent issues of the courts such as equipment and human resources for the high court, to name a few,” Mahao said.

He further revealed plans for the National Reforms Authority to have a chief accounting officer by October.
