LUCT donates white canes

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) yesterday handed out 33 white canes to St Catherine’s High School’s visually impaired leaners.

LUCT registrar Moroka Hoohlo said the gesture is part of the institution’s Heal the World Foundation, an initiative to give back to the community.

Hoohlo expressed hope that the canes will be put to good use and benefit the recipients, emphasizing that LUCT will always be on hand to lend a helping hand wherever it can.

On behalf of St Catherine’s High School, board member board Atwell Xana thanked LUCT and indicated that the canes will be very helpful to the learners, especially when they venture into town as people will easily recognize them and assist them when necessary.

One of the learners who received a cane, Motšetšeroa Motšetšeroa, said the canes came at a time they really need them, given the ripple effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are at a time when we shouldn’t be touching surfaces that are touched by other people. These canes are going to help us to be independent and not depend on people to get around, ” he said.

Present to receive the gifts were St Catherine’s visually impaired students, teachers, the principal, and chairperson of the school board. The minister of social development, ‘Matebatso Doti, witnessed the occasion
