Covid-19 throws Lesotho into disarray

By Kefiloe Kajane

As Lesotho grapples with the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, several institutions like schools and government departments have started suspending operations as they record new Covid-19 cases.

The ministry of development and planning yesterday released a statement indicating that one of its employees has been admitted at Berea Hospital while awaiting a Covid-19 test.

The ministry stated that offices at headquarters in Maseru will be closed from January 4 to Friday January 8.

Another office that has suspended services is the Roads Directorate, which disclosed that it has had a confirmed Covid-19 case which unfortunately led to the death of one of its employees on January 2.

“The officer had been in the building up to December 24 and as precautionary measure, all the offices will be fumigated from January 5 to January 7,” the Roads Directorate said in a statement.

In another development, Lerotholi Polytechnic has closed doors from January 4 until further notice due to two confirmed Covid-19 cases at their premises.

The institution has informed staff and students that the campus will be off limits as no offices will be open, only people who reside on campus will be allowed entry and exit.
