Small business develops Marakeng app

As it goes about The ministry navigates the access to market during the Covid19 pandemic crisis.

The ministry of small business cooperatives and marketing, in collaboration with Technomath Lesotho and UNDP through Accelerator Lab Support, has developed and introduced the urgent stimulus and backstop measures such as a market access smart phone application (Marakeng App) to be officially launched soon.

In a statement released on Thursday, the ministry explains that Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives societies are the backbone of Lesotho economy.

“They are the major employers for women, youth and           driver of innovation. Like other industries, MSMEs and cooperatives societies have been exposed to the Covid-19 pandemic economic impact due to the precautions and disproportionate presence economic sectors affected by social distancing measures and transport irruptions. MSMES and cooperatives societies are also particularly exposed to trade restrictions.

“The App is designed for marketing of agricultural products (grains, fruits and vegetables, eggs. milk, chicken and food etc.) by Basotho micro and small medium businesses with cooperative societies,” the ministry indicated.

They explained that the App will be helpful for the producers, MSMEs and cooperatives societies during the Covid-19 pandemic enhancing the business operations without close contact.

They stated that the office is open for help with registration of farmers/producers and retailers and guidance in using the App – or WhatsApp support.
