The ministry of local government and chieftainship has called on chiefs to ensure that community members attending funerals abide by Covid-19 regulations.
Funerals have been identified as Covid-19 super spreaders by Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro, who also called on Basotho to avoid attending such gatherings in large numbers.
The ministry of local government has, as a result, revealed plans to provide chiefs with Covid-19 education and personal protective equipment, among others.
“Where funeral parlors are not close by, the corpse should be buried immediately whether the cause of death is Covid-19 or not. The family of the deceased is expected to report the death same on the day of the death, and registration is expected to be done on the same day by the local chief and home affairs officials.
“A death certificate is expected to be issued within five days by home affairs officials who will be working closely with the office of the chief or local government. It is vital that chiefs cooperate with institutions that provide services during this time to speed up the processes.
“Funerals are still expected to be held from 7:00am to 10:00am. Guests entering any village are required to be in possession of a Covid-19 certificate.”
