Hospitals are ready for third wave

By Neo Kolane

All hospitals in the country are reportedly prepared for the third wave in terms of oxygen supplies, medication as well as beds.

This after South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Disease disclosed that, in the week ending April 24, the Free State had the second-highest incident risk of South Africa’s nine provinces. The incidence risk, a measure of people’s risk of contracting this coronavirus, also increased marginally in the province.

Free State department of health spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi says the hotspots are Bloemfontein, Welkom, QwaQwa, Ladybrand and Ficksburg.

However, in an interview with theReporter, Lesotho’s director of clinical services, Lucy Mapota said they have increased oxygen concentration and, at the end of this month, they will be installing an oxygen plant at Berea and Mafeteng hospitals.

Mapota also stated that they received 100 oxygen cylinders on Friday, which are currently being distributed to hospitals.

She also mentioned that 500 extra beds are waiting to be used in the event of a crisis. Mapota pleaded with Basotho to wear masks and sanitize because prevention is cheaper and that treating a patient at a hospital is expensive.
