Majoro comments on high death rate

By Majirata Latela

The National Covid-19 Secretariet (Nacosec) has in recent weeks reported increasing numbers of Covid-19 deaths, which have left people worried about the new delta variant of the coronavirus.

Prime Minister Dr Moeketsi Majoro says he has been informed by doctors that many Covid-19 patients die on arrival at hospitals due to low body oxygen concentration levels.

“I am told by doctors that the reason why Covid-19 patients die when they get to hospital is because they delay to seek medical attention and when they get there they die due to very low oxyven concentration levels.

“People should stop staying at home even when they realise that they are not getting any better; postponing going to the hospital does not help them because when they arrive in hospitals the level of oxygen in their bodies is already critically low and it is not possible to treat them.

“People should make sure that when they are attacked by the virus they have their level of oxygen tested as it should not be below 90 percent. When your level of concentration is below 70 percent it means that is a bad sign.”

Majoro said this when unveiling an oxygen generating plant at Motebang Hospital in Leribe.

According to Nacosec statistics for the Month of August 2021, 26 people died from Covid-19 related diseases.

Health minister Semano Sekatle also advised people to go to hospital before they get very ill.

He said artificial oxygen will not be helpful to them if they get to hospitals very sick.
