Moshoeshoe Walk is back

By Mats’eliso Phulane

The 2022 edition of the historic Moshoeshoe 1 Walk – which starts at Menkhoaneng in the Leribe district and ends at Thaba-Bosiu in Maseru – will be held from March 9 to 12.

The annual event began in 2007 with the aim of celebrating the life of the Basotho founder King Moshoeshoe I and his good leadership.

Event organizer Thabo Maretlane, who is also the director of TConnexion, says the highlight of this year’s walk will be the planting of 10,000 trees and the official opening of a church at Ha Makhoroana.

“The Lesotho Tourism Development Cooperation plans to plant 2000 trees at Menkhoaneng, Mahobong, Lipetu, Malimong, and Thaba-Bosiu respectively. We will also give away 40 blankets to communities at Mahobong. It will culminate in the official opening of the church at Ha Makhoroana,” Maretlane said.

He emphasised that the aim of this walk is to make the founder of Basotho nation known as the nation will in 2024 be celebrating 200 years of his journey from Menkhoaneng to Thaba-Bosiu.

Maretlane said, after the Covid-19 saw the last two editions of the walk falling off, he is expecting a high turn-out of participants in this year’s event which will also feature a camping experience.

Buses will leave Pioneer Mall for Menkhoaneng at 9:00am on March 9. People are expected to bring along their camping tents, camping boots and sanitary tools.
