First snow of the year is expected

By Neo Kolane

The first snow of the year on the radar in Southern Africa is possible for Lesotho, Eastern Cape and the Drakensburg this coming weekend, according to reports from South Africa.

Not very low level of snow is expected at this stage as the freezing level is quite high. Snow is not expected to be far down Sani Pass and may not even fall on the Pass at all.

However, sources say Lesotho’s weather office says is monitoring the situation and will release a statement tomorrow.

The minister of energy and meteorology, Mohapi Mohapinyane in September last year said the 2021/2022 rainfall season was likely to be influenced by weak La Nina which is associated with enhanced precipitation over the country.

Mohapinyane added that temperatures are predicted to be normal for the period October 2021 to March 2022 with a possibility of below normal.

“Occurrences of strong winds, lightning, severe thunderstorms, flash floods and hailstorms, are common weather phenomena in summer. However, climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of weather and climate extremes,” Mohapinyane said.
