ECoL, NUL sign quality assurance MoU

By Matṧeliso Phulane

The Examinations Council of Lesotho (ECoL) has ended its long time Quality Assurance of Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary Education (LGCSE) with the University of Cambridge and entered into a new partnership with the National University of Lesotho (NUL)

During the ceremony which was held on Tuesday this week at NUL, the minister of education and training Dr Ntoi Rapapa warned NUL that as the new LGCSE, quality assurance should be upheld to the highest standard as its reputation; even in matters unrelated to its function as it may negatively affect the quality of LGCSE and barring Basotho entry into international universities.

Rapapa added that, even though ECoL stated that services done by University of Cambridge were too costly, quality of educational certificate should highly be considered, because it is much more important than money.

“As the ministry of education and training we expect that, this partnership should be protected against the use of money, decisions making, as well as acceptance of undergraduate students should in order to sustain their partnership.

Rapapa said he believes that quality assurance in basic education will be better than it was before adding that it should be maintained.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of NUL, Professor Kananelo Mosito requested to the minister that he wished to see the emergence of the National Qualifications Authority whom they will work with as they will be running the assignment.

Mosito also appealed for a legislatively created Lesotho qualification framework in order for them to be able to do things properly.
